McGrath created a surprise by defeating Gledhill, so raising Australia’s hopes. Hopman, who had p]«3-ed brilliantlythroughout the Test, went down to Allison through superior courtcraft. Van Ryn’s victory over Sproule was unexpected, but his service reliability countered Sproulc’s shots. Hopman and Crawford after the defeat of Allison and Y’an Ryn yesterday were disappointing. A r ines and Gledhill on present form are the better pair. Crawford in the final of the doubles appeared listless and in need of a spell. Hopman was also weak on the backhand.
