TERRACE END SCHOOL
MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the Terrace End School Committee was held last evening, Mr AV. L- Maepherson presiding. Also present were Messrs AV. 13. Tennent, J. JK. Patpn, J. Davidson and C. it. Luke (secretary). An apology for absence was received from Mr J. H. Nash. The chairman reported on the meeting convened of bath authorities in the city. The matter of charges had been considered, but no finality "would be reached until the Hokowhitu School Committee reached a decision on the question. The committee decided to reduce the charges at its baths for adults to 7s 6d for men and 6s for ladies for the season, family tickets to be 12s 6d. Casual charges for children are to remain at 2d, Mr Maepherson stating that these were a source of much revenue. . ... It was decided to discontinue the customary rebate to the Swimming Club in view of the reduced charges decided upon. The headmaster (Mr A. AV. Thompson) reported that the roll stood at 660. The daily attendances were affected by the prevalence of whooping cough and influenza, the highest daily attendance for the past month being 620. Arbor Day was celebrated during the month, 100 Douglas fir and 100 redwood trees being planted in the eastern shrubbery. Mr D. D. Maepherson, Conservator of Forests, had addressed the children. The football season was over and the play-off for the junior shield had resulted in a win for the B team after a close game with the A team. The winners had been ably coached during the season by Mr D. Biel. The midget team, under the control of Mr E. G. Schwarz, again won the midget competition conducted by the Manawatu Rugby Union. Two handsome silver medals had been donated by Mr A. S. AVard, of Church Street, for the best all-round player in the senior and junior teams respectively. Mr AVard had been of great assistance during the Rugby season, having given much of his time to the school in refereeing and assisting m the coaching of the boys. Mr Thompson had received a medal from Mr L. J Cookery, an old boy of the school, to be awarded to the most improved cricketer for the 1933 season. Miss AV. A. Valentine, inspector of backward children, paid a.n official visit last week. The amount collected in connection with the Savings Bank scheme was £8 2s lid. The report was adopted. The committee asked Mr Thompson to convey to Mr Schwarz and Mr Biel appreciation of their work in coaching the football teams. Mr AVard and Mr Cockery are to be forwarded letters expressing appreciation of their generosity. Accounts totalling £9 11s Id were passed for payment. The secretary of the Manawatu Methodist Young AVomen’s Bible Class Union acknowledged advice that the use of the school had been granted for the Easter convention and agreed to take out the necessary insurances.— Received. Mr Maepherson reported on the recent meeting of the Palmerston North and District School Committees Association, when a committee had been formed to draw up a constitution, a copy of which was presented.. These rules are to be confirmed at a meeting next week. Messrs Maepherson, Luke and Paton were appointed to attend this meeting and to submit an amendment to the proposed constitutl<Tli.e committee discussed the progress of the ground development work. _The filling in of the pit was proceeding Messrs Davidson and Luke wore appointed the visiting committee for the ensuing month.
