Mrs T. P. Rainger, Palmerston North, is visiting Auckland. Mrs Christie, of Marton, is the guest of Mrs lan Johnston, Lower Hutt.
Mrs B. Austin was a Wellington visitor to Foxton for the races. Mrs Austin was recently made a life member of the Foxton Racing Club, and was welcomed by many friends. Mrs E. Hulme, the well-known producer, arrived in Palmerston North yesterday to arrange for the production of ‘‘A Country Girl” by the Palmerston North Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society. Mrs Hulme has acted in the same capacity at previous efforts by the local society. Miss McAnulty, who has been in charge of the mantle showroom at the C. M. Ross Coy., Ltd., for some years, has accepted a position with a Dunedin firm, and will leave for the south in about three weeks’ time. Miss McAnulty’s departure will be regretted by her many friends in the city. The presentation of a beautiful leather bound copy of Barrie’s plays was made by Rev. D. J. Davies, vicar of St. Peter’s Church, Terrace End, to Mrs S. T. Bristow, the producer of the very successful play ‘‘Champion North,” at the conclusion of the play last evening. The presentation was made on behalf of the choir of St. Peter’s Church, for the organ fund of which parish the play was staged. In handing the gift to Mrs Bristow in recognition of her services, Mr Davies congratulated her on the success which she had achieved. Unless wiser counsels prevail, women here are likely to become martyrs to fantastic fashion designers (says a London report). This winter eccentricity seems to be the keynote of the new wraps which have collars so high and deep, fur so thick and heavy, that the wearer cannot possibly see over her shoulder. There has been much criticism lately of the London designers, who are charged with making both themselves and their customers ridiculous by un-called-for extravagances. It is felt that if this tendency is not soon discouraged smart women will once again rely exclusively on Paris, which seems to have lost some prestige during the past year.
