MANAWATU LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP. MISSES KAY AND GAISFORD LEAD. The feature of the day’s play at the end of the two qualifying rounds for the Manawatu ladies’ championship, at , the Hokowhitij, Ihlks yesterday afternoon, was that the two leading players, Misses Oliver Kay and B. Gaisford, finished on level terms, each having an aggregate gross score of 164, with which they led a strong and record field of players. The course was in perfect order, but a heavy cross-wind proved the undoing of many competitors who were unable to adapt themselves to the tricky conditions. Taking 85 for the morning round, Miss Kay showed the expected improvement in the afternoon, when she handed in the best card after playing a very fine round of 79. She drove a beautiful ball throughout, and made perfect . approaches, but was a trifle erratic on the greens, although she sank some difficult putts. Putting for five at the third, she lipped the hole and took six. However, she sank two beautiful putts at the 6th and 7th holes, the first being a fifteenfooter over undulating ground. At the 7th she pulled her second shot into the bunker at the right, leaving her a 9ft. putt, which she sank. She was in the hunker to the right at the Bth and came out too strongly, nearly overrunning the green, but was down in four. She secured a nice three at Eden and completed the outward journey in 88, one over scratch figures. After failing with a long putt into the wind at the 10th, Miss Kay was down for four. She took five at the next after missing a difficult putt. She overran the pin with a long putt from the edge of the green at Land’s End, but was down for three. Going to the 13tli, she duffed her second and was through the green with her third. Left with a bad lie, she played a beautiful approach, but took six at the hole after missing with a short putt. She was down in four at the j.4th and repeated this at the 15th after being well on the green in two. She narrowly missed a putt for three at the last hole, but finished up with a splendid round of 79. Her figures over the last nine holes read as follow:—! 5 3 6 4 4 6 4 5—41.
The trophy for the best aggregate score was won by Miss Kay after a count back over the last nine holes, both she and Miss Gaisford having finished with totals of 164. MISS GAISFORD’S ROUND.
Miss Gaisford did a very good round of 83 in the afternoon. She was in a bunker at the first hole and again at Willows after topping her second with the brassie. bhe was through the green with her approach at River bide, but recovered well and required only one putt. She was bunkered at the Bth, but was out in 39. At the 17tlr she had a putt for four, but the ball kicked out and she took five. She was in the bunker with her second at the last and took two to get out, then taking three putts on the green to mar a good round with a seven. Miss Gaisford was playing a beautiful game off the tees and consistently outdrove Mrs Stout by twenty or thirty yards. Her card read as follows : —Out: 545365533 3 —39. In: 45455455 7—44. Total 83. Mrs H. C. Collinson, who did a round of 87 in the morning, had much trouble in the afternoon in the bunkers and took 90. Her card read as follows: —Out: 56637 563 3 —44. In: 68454554 5—46. Total 90. Mrs D. Stout, who also went round in 87 in the morning, was unable to settle in the afternoon, being baffled by the cross wind after conditions on the Heretaunga links. She had many lapses on the greens. Mrs Rota, of Hawera, finished third on the morning’s list with a gross 86, playing very sound golf. Only Misses Gaisford and Kay were ahead of her in the first round, her card for which read as follows :—Out: 5 5 5 4 6 5 5 3 4—42. In: 47365554 5—44. Total 86. However, Mrs Rota went back badly in the afternoon and failed with her putting, returning a score of 94.
