RONGOTEA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) RONCOTEA, Oct. 9. On Saturday afternoon the tennis courts were officially opened for play for the 1933-34 season. The president (Mr S. Crowhurst) officiated, stating that he was very pleased to sec such a large attendance and hoped that those present would have an enjoyable afternoon’s sport. The weather was somewhat unsettled, and near the conclusion of the tournament, which was a 10-minute yankec one, light rain fell and somewhat marred the final games. The winner of the ladies’ trophy was Miss P. Frccklington, who was the only ln< to will all her games. The final for tho men’s trophy was contested by E. Tuiinicliffo and VV. Gloyn, tho .former winning after a very even game. The courts have been repaired and are at present in a very fair condition, and ladder games will commence shortly. The committee are going to place the members on the ladder in
the positions which they think players should occupy. Rongotea is to be linked up with tho carnival movement, and a meeting is to bo held in the board room on Tuesday night, when Miss J. Russell (tho Farmers’ Queen) will be present, also a party of friends from Palmerston North. It is intended to form a committee to further Miss Russell’s interests. Promises of assistance have already been made, and it is expected that there will bo a generous response from this meeting to tho appeal of the- Central Relief Oommittce. Aeroplanes flying above Rongotea are no uncommon sight, but yesterday afternoon a visiting ’plane circled over tho township for about ton minutes, at times flying so low that it appeared to be just above the tree tops. Excitement became intense when it was seen to swoop lower than over and almost touched tho ground in a paddock on the outskirts of the town. However, it rose again above the tree tops, and after more flying to and fro beaded off in tho direction of Palmorston North.
