LONGBURN

(From Our Own Correspondent.) LONGBURN, Oct. 9. On Saturday night Mr and Mrs A. Bateman, of Wanganui, gave a most enjoyable party , for Aliss F. Fletcher on the occasion of her 21st birthday. The gathering was held at the residence of Air and Airs W. Fletcher, Karere. Dancing and games occupied most of the evening, also a number of competitions, the winners being Aliss AI. Bell and Mr I. Fraser. A statue dance was won by Miss R. Birch and Air K Jewell. Vocal items wero rendered by Aliss R. Birch. Supper was partaken of, a special feature being the handsome birthday cake, after which the following toasts were honoured: Aliss Fletcher proposed by her father and responded to by Aliss Bateman; Air and Mrs A. Bateman, proposed by Air S. Alartin. Miss Fletcher was then presented with a golden key which was autographed by the guests. Later, Mr E. Jewell, on behalf of those present, congratulated tho guest of honour on attaining her majority. Ho also thanked Air and Mrs Bateman, and Mr and Mrs Fletcher for such a successful evening and. tor giving cvcryono such a splendid time. Dance music was supplied by Airs Fletcher, Aiisscs R. Birch and AI. Rowland and Air I. Fraser. Among those present. were: Air and Airs W. Fletcher, Air and Mrs Bateman, Airs J. Callcson, Mrs Bell, Air and Mrs E, Marshall, Misses U. B lctchcr, B. Bateman (Wanganui), Coles (2), L. Doust- (Wanganui), R. Birch, Ai. Rowland, Bells (3), Fletcher (3), Parker (2), 11. Hills, Hcarsey (2), .R. Marshall, P. Johnston; Messrs J. Fletcher, lu’ascr (<w» E. Jewell, Rowland (2), Alderslcy (2), R. Laing, S. Alartin, A. Ploen, Fletcher (3), G. 8011. Air J. Fletcher ably carried out the duties of AI.C. The party concluded at a late hour with tho singing of “Auld Lang Sync.” , On Saturday afternoon, a children s birthday party was given by Airs T. Rowland, of Karere, over thirty children and a number of parents being present. Outdoor games and competitions were played on tho lawn and wore thoroughly enjoyed by tho young people. A dainty tea was provided. Two birthday cakes with candles, for Aliss Ruth and Alaster Lincoln Rowland, held places of honour on tho table. Later tho room was cleared and items were given by the children. The annual meeting of the Tennis Club was held on Wednesday night, Hie presl dent (Air A. Nicol) presiding over a fanattendance. The annual report stated: Tho season proved to bo a very successful one and although there was no increase in membership the balance-sheet shows tho substantial credit balance of £l4 18s 7d. Keen interest was displayed by members and it was pleasing to note how the standard .of play had improved from that o.f previous seasons. A team was entered in the Manawatu Tennis Association’s B grade competition and after many closely contested matches w-as successful in winning its section final. In the play-off m inter-section final Longburn was narrowly defeated by Takaro. The club championships and handicap events resulted as follow: Ladies’ championship, Airs Godfrey; men’s championship, H. Alabey; ladies’ handicap, Airs Godfrey; men’s handicap, E. Jewell. At the end of tho season a dance was hold at which the trophies were presented to tho respective winners. Arrangements were made with the School Committee for tho topdressing of the courts and the work has now been completed. The prospects for the coming season arc exceedingly bright, several new members having signified their intention of joining. The following officers were elected: Patron, Air R. Tanner (reelected) : president, Air A. Nicol (reelected) ; vice-presidents, Alessrs T. Cooksley, A. Sansom, T. Orrnsby, W. Grace, R. Day and J. Callcson; secretary, Mr W. Alderslcy (re-elected); club captain, Air J. Fletcher; selection committee, Airs Godfrey, Messrs Jewell, Fletcher and Aldersley; general committee, Airs Godfrey, Aiisscs Chamberlain. Hills, Lemberg and Campbell, Alessrs C. Cookslcy, D. Rowland, J. Alderslcy, S. Martin, J. Fletcher and, H. Alabey. It was decided to again enter a team in the- Manawatu’ Tennis Association B grade competition. rThe opening of the Tennis f Club took place on Saturday afternoon, there being a splendid attendance in spite of the 'inclemency of the weather. As a result of tho recent topdressing tho courts were in splendid condition and. many .enjoyable games were played. During the afternoon tea interval, Mr. W. Alderslcy introduced the president who congratulated the club on its sound financial position. It was gratifying to see such a largo number of keen members present, and ho hoped that the club would be successful in its activities for tho coming season. Ho then declared the courts officially opened. Mrs R. Jensen, of Jchnsonvillc, is visiting her mother, Mrs Bowler. Airs P. Campbell is the guest of Airs W. Campbell. Mr 11. Bowler is spending a holiday in Christchurch. Mr and Airs Hopping arc spending a holiday in Napier. Airs D. Vowlcs ,of Wellington, is visiting her mother, Airs R. Tanner, “Lonsdale.”
