RUGBY LEAGUE.

ENGLAND WINS TEST. LONDON, Oct. 7. Thirty-five thousand people witnessed the first League Test at Manchester, when England defeated Australia by 4 points to nil. Sullivan kicked two goals in the second spell. Rain started to fall ten .minutes before play commenced. The ball was greasy and difficult to handle, but tho Australians dominated the first half, and only dogged defence prevented at least two Australian tries. Thiclmesse, Hey, Brown, and Ridley handled perfectly. England kept the ball close in tire second spell, Evans, Davies and Risman doing solid work. Australia made a desperate assault, but the defence was secure. Sullivan had four shots at goal, two succeeding. England was now having the best of the game, tackling splendidly and showing concerted action in spoiling their opponents’ moves. The contest provided a very keen struggle, but it was hardly up to international quality. It was notable more for grimness than for brilliance. SYDNEY TEAM IN TARANAKI. Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH, Oct. 8. The St. George (Sydney) Rugby League team defeated Taranaki by 22 points to 14. The match was not a very good exhibition.
