AMATEUR CYCLE RACE
WANGANUI TO PALMERSTON NORTH. LAWRENCE BREAKS RECORD. The 47-mile amateur cycle race, on Saturday, from Wanganui to Palmerston North, conducted by the Manawatu Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club, was a success in every way. The weather conditions were ideal and there was a strong wind blowing in the cyclists’ favour. Some 64 riders faced the starter, there being only six scratchings, and three late entries were handicapped on the mark, these being E. Jennings (Palmerston North) 13min., E. Walker (Palmerston North) 14, and C. Wliakarau (Wanganui) 20. There was a large crowd to see the riders away at Wanganui, the limit men leaving the River City at a very fast pace at 1.22 . p.m. The five scratch men were strengthened with the addition of another rider, Preston, who was to have started on the 3-minute mark, but decided to go back to the scratch mark as his two comarkers did not start. The limit men made full use of their handicap and at half-way the leaders were D. Coles, E. Danielson, D. Georgette and G. Tamahana, these all being Wanganui riders. They reached the half-way point at 2.27 p.m., having taken 1 hour 5 minutes. They were leading at this stage by G minutes on the next bunch. The scratch men were making a merry pace, hilt it could be seen early that none of the back-markers would have a chance of catching the leaders, who went on for Danielson to win. Just prior to reaching Bulls, Guillard (Tailiape) made the pace too solid for the others, but Lawrence managed to keep within a reasonable distance. Rogers and Wade here faded back. The pace became too hot for Blackett (Wellington) and he decided to retire. Guillard managed to keep about half a-mile in front of Lawrence until Newbury was reached. Then Lawrence came up at wonderful speed to eventually beat Guillard for fastest time by 1-5 second. Lawrence broke the record previously held by Rogers (Palmerston North), who in 1931 did the 47 miles in llir. 48min. 59sec. H. Henderson (professional) made the distance, in a little over llir. 42min. in 1912, but it is understood that this record was not recognised and that Henderson’s record for a professional was 1.48, which he made some six years later. It is also understood that Lawrence’s record on Saturday is an amateur record for New Zealand for the distance. The race was run without any mishaps, but two St. John Ambulance men from Wanganui and two from Palmerston North followed the race in case of accidents. Detailed results were:E. Danielson (Wanganui), 20min., llir. 59min. 1 C. Loveridge (Wanganui), 17min., llir. 50.5 mi a., 2 H. Anderson (\\anganui), 17mm., lhrs 50-J-min., 3 D. Georgetti (Wanganui), 20min.,. 21rr. lmin., 4 D.
