GOLF TITLES

THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP. QUALIFYING PLAY. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Oct. 7. The annual New Zealand golf championship tournament was continued at the Titirangi links on Saturday. The weather was again fine and warm, with a fairly stiff breeze blowing down the course. The pins had been shifted on all greens, which were hard, dry, and fast, leading to innumerable inaccuracies in putting. The best card of the day was returned by PI. R. Blair, the Christchurch Golf Club’s professional at Shirley. Ho went out in 37, and returned in the excellent figures of notwithstanding his missing an 18m putt on the thirteenth green. THE QUALIFYING CARDS’

Features of Blair’s card were a 2 at the fourth hole, a 3 at the seventh, after being bunkered, a 3 at the tenth, and a 4 at the twelft].i. Apart from a few slips with putting. Blair played par golf, hitting the ball very cleanly and crisply. The veteran A. D. 'S. Duncan increased his score somewhat with a 6 at the eighth and a 7 at the seventeenth, while he also made numerous putting mistakes. A. J. Shaw, the title-holder, commanded the largest gallery. He reached the turn in 36, after having slipped a stroke at the short fourth. His trouble commenced at the tenth, where his drive was hit slightly off the line and finished under a tree, a 6 resulting. He lost another stroke at the eleventh, where his shot to the green caught a blinker. A fine 4at “Wrecker" enabled him to recover a stroke, but at tlie fifteenth lie attempted a long carry and finished 'in the ti-tree, and. took another n - Missed putts at the sixteenth and seventeenth cost him two more strokes, and he completed the home journey in 42 with a 4 at- the eighteenth. B. H. Menzies,* the Auckland amateur, who led the field on the previous day, played soundly to register 37 for the first nine holes, but thereafter played anything but convincing golf to do the homeward journey in U.

w. S. Ralph, the Auckland leading amateur, who returned one of the best cards on the' previous day, failed to putt with any confidence, - taking three putts on five'greens. His long game, however, was very steady,'as indicated by his score of 40 each way. A. J. Shaw won the Gibson Cup for the best first .round by the. professionals.

AUCKLAND, Oct. 8. There was a much larger crowd of spectators than on the opening day, and the better-known players all commanded a substantial following. The championship at the end of the second day bears a very open appearance, and with so many players within striking distance to-morrow’s play will be followed with exceptional interest. A feature of the scoring is that 10 of the first 11 players are professionals. This is not considering Menzies, who did not enter for the open championship. The only amateur in the first 11, therefore, is W. S. Ralph, the Auckland club’s veteran.

Of the 116 players, who returned cards for the first round on the opening day, 36 have been eliminated, leaving 80 to contest the third and fourth rounds to-morrow. ■ The rain which fell to-day will have a good effect on the dry greens, and it will not o be surprising to see some , reversals of form. Players who qualified

handed in cards of 168 or better, there being no fewer than six on the 168 mark.

B. M. Silk, one of the most fancied candidates for the amateur championship, just managed to scrape in. As on the opening day, he was completely out of touch on the greens, where his putting was faulty, the ball lipping the cup on numerous occasions. The teams’ match for the O’Rorke Vase was decided on Saturday, the team of four players* with the lowest aggregate in the second round taking the trophy. The winning team was Auckland No. 1, whose cards totalled 317. The scores of other teams were: Titirangi No. 1, 331; Auckland' No. 2. 331; Titirangi No. 2, 343; Wellington, 346; Wanganui, 358. The Hutt Club, which won the trophy last year, did not enter a team. At the conclusion .of the open event, the 32 leading amateurs will be drawn for match play in the amateur championshp, and the 16 leading professionals for the professional championship. TARANAKI WOMEN’S FINAL. Per Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH, Oct. 8. Miss V. Fleming (Christchurch) defeated Mrs G. H. Clark (New Plymouth) in the final of the Taranaki women’s golf championship. MANAWATU CLUB. OCTOBER STROKE COMPETITION. Members of the Manawatu Golf Club were engaged in their October stroke competition on Saturday afternoon. The conditions were not all that could be desired, a blustering wind having to be contended with, while intermittent rain fell. The best cards were:— A Grade.—-E. H. Drew, 85—14—71; J. F. Rodden, 84—12—72; J. F. Feild, 83—10—73; L. Potter, 88—14—74; C. G. Moore, 81—6—75; G. M. McCaslcill, 87—12—75; P: G. Cope, 81—5—76 ; L. Spoochlev, 88—12—76; T. Stubbs, 84— 7—77; E. J. Treliey, 90—12—78; K. S. Glendinning, 81—3—78 ; N. G. Ingham, 85—7—78 ; L. Siefert, 79—scr—--79. ‘ B Grade.—L. Callis, 92—21—71; W. Hall, 94—20—74 ; G. J. Eising, 99 24—75; A. E. Hansel, 96—20—76; D. West, 101—22—79; E. A 7. Spear, 95 15—80 ; E. R. Wimsott, 95—15—80 ; G. P. Maule, 102—20—82. THE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP. The opportunity was taken over the week-end to advance the championship further by the playing of the quarterfinals. The day’s play was productive of a surprise when J. M. Taylor defeated A. E. Ekstdet in a close game. Taylor played with his customary steadiness and it was seldom that he failed to maintain a true line between tees and greens. Ekstedt was 3 down with four holes to go. He got an eagle 3 on the loth, but was finally beaten 1 down

K. S. Glendinning accounted for S. AY. Rapley and he will now meet 0. H. AA 7 ill:iams to determine who will oppose Taylor in the semi-final. In the other half of the draw J. AY 7 . Rodden beat R. Hatch and he will now meet the title holder, L. Seifert. FOUR BALL BOGEY.

There was not a very big entry for the four-ball bogey at the week-end, but it would have taken something phenomenal to have beaten the card of 10 up handed in by L. Seifert and N. G. Ingham. L. Seifert also carried off the honours in the singles with a card of 1 up.
