WELLINGTON STOCK EXCHANGE.
LAST WEEK’S BUSINESS AND PRICES. Brisk trading was dono on the metropolitan stock exchanges last week, but the volume of business was loss than that of recent weeks. Price movements wero mostly of narrow extent, and the market as a whole was very firm. Government loans and local body debentures were tightly held, and business was consequently very restricted. Holders were making no concessions, and supplies being hard to locate, prices showed a firming tendency. The 4 per cent, inscribed stock, 1940, sold to £lO2, tho 1946 maturity to £lOl. the 1949’s to £lO2 ss, and 1955’s to £lOl ss. Tho 4 per cent, bonds, 1940, wero dono at £lOl 10s, 1946’s to £lOl, 1949’s to £lO2 ss, and 1955’s at £lOl. Tho 3£ per cent, stock, 1939-43, sold at £IOO 7s 6d, tho 1939-52’s at £lOl 7s 6d and £lOl 15s, and tho 1938-52’s at £lOl 7s 6d. Little business was done in local body debentures. A featuro of tho week’s trading was tho great activity in Bank of New Zealand shares, which staged a notable recovery in prices. Opening at 465, they advanced rapidly to 48s 6d, with a slight easing at the week-end. Fairly good business was dono in Commercial of Australia®, which shaded from 17s lOd to 16s 7d, recovering later to 16s lOd; tho preference wero done at £8 13s 6d and £8 14s. New South Wales were firm sellers, mostly at £34 15s, ono or two sales early in the week being at 2s 6d lower. Australasias held their strength at £l3 2s 6d. E.S. and A. Banks sold at £5 19s, £6 and £5 19s 9d. Union of Australias were firm at £lO 8s up to £lO 10s. Commercial of Sydney moved up to £lB 9s. National of Now 1 Zealand wero inactive and steady at 84s 6d. Natioanl of Australasia, £lO paid, were dono at £l3 9s, and tho £5 paid at £6 15s 6d to £6 11s. Pastoral shares were quiet but firm. Dalgctys sold at £lO 12s 6d and £lO 17s 6d, Goldsbrough, Morts at 28s 8d up to 29s Id, and Now Zealand Loan and Mercantile ordinary stock at £6B ss. New ,Zealand Guarantee Corporations were fairly active sellers at 8s 2d to 7s lOd, firming at the close to Bs. Some irregularity was seen in New Zealand Insurance, which dropped back from 55s to 53s 9d, recovering later to 545. South British wore traded at 74s 3d and 74s 6d, Quccnslands at 56s and 56s 6d, and Nationals at 18s 3d to 18s 4d. Gas shares were firm and fairly active, Wellingtons being dono at 345, Aueklands at 23s 7jd, and Christchurch at 28s. Gear Meats wore done at 33s 3d. New Zealand Rcfrigeratings were slightly easier, the £1 paid soiling at 19s lid to 19s 8d and 19s 9d, and the 10s paid at 9s 9d to 9s 5d and 9s 6d. Ivaiapoi Woollens, 17s paid, firmed from 8s 6d to 9s and the preference were traded at 15s 3d. Westport Coals sold at 13s 3d, and Grey Valley at 13s 6d and 13s Bd. Kauri Timber were better at 13s 2d. Huddart-Parkcrs were easier at 30s 6d, and P. and O. deferred stock sold firmly at 245. Breweries were a firmer market last week. Now Zcalands were the most active, soiling at 37s 7d up to 38s. Tooth’s firmed sharply from 41s to 43s 3d and 435. Toohcy’s sold at 23s 6d and 245, Carlton’s at- 38s 6d and 40s 6d, and Staples at 27s lOd and 27. s 9d. Miscellaneous shares were generally firm, and trading was not very extensive. British Tobaccos sold at 36s 8d to 37s 6d, shading a little later in the week. Burns Philp wero firm at 51s 9d and 525, as wore Colonial Sugars at £59 ss. Dunlop Rubbers improved from 18s 2d to 18s 10jd and Electrolytic Zinc preference from 34s 3d to 35s 3d. Wilson’s Cement sold at 34s 6d, but following tho return of 10s a share, they sold at 24s Id up to 25s 3d. SATURDAY’S QUOTATIONS. Evidence o£ the present improvement in stock values compared with the recent past appears in the fact that a Wairarapa runholder a few daye ago sold five-year-old breeding ewes for 15s per head. The price he obtained last Vear for the same class of stock was 7s 4d.
