HOCKEY
SATURDAY’S RESULTS. KEEN GAMES WITNESSED. The weather favoured hockey enthusiasts on Saturday afternoon, when the competitions held under the auspices of the Manawatu Association were continued. The grounds, being firm, were ideal for play. MASSEY COLLEGE v. PHOENIX.
The game between Massey College and Phoenix resulted in a draw, each side scoring two goals. K. Strothers was responsible for the College brace, whilst J. Sutton shot the two goals for Phoenix. At half-time the score was 1-all. The impire was Mr E. R. Chapman. BROADWAY A BEAT C. 0.8. At half-time in the match in which Broadway beat 0.0.8. by two goals to nil there was no score. It was a fast match, Broadway proving most efficient in following up. O’Brien and Drinkwater were responsible for Broadway’s win. The umpires were Messrs W. H. Wilson and W. Lundy. INTERMEDIATE GAMES.
Kia beat Rovers by three goals to two in one of the brightest matches yet witnessed this season. The element of suspense was sustained from start to finish. Boniface shot Kia’s goals, while Prentice and Oliver shot Rovers’ goals. The umnires were Messrs H. Byers and W. Sutton. Y.M.C.A. defeated Huias by 12 goals to 1. Harkness (2), Grant (2),. Wood (4) and Abraham (4) were the Y.M.C.A. goal scorers. Pees saved Huias from absolute defeat. The umpires were Messrs H. Byers and W. Sutton. JUNIOR MATCHES.
Massey College beat Phoenix by sixgoals to two in an interesting game. Gilmer (2), Lynch (2), Lill (1) and Sliand (1) were responsible for the College win. Baker and Goodwin shot the Phoenix goals. The umpire was Mr M. Levy. In the junior match Combined Services beat Broadway by five goals to one. B. Leader (4) and Robinson obtained the Services’ score, while Lyon scored for Broadway. The umpires were Messrs V. Turner and I\. Burn. WOMEN’S MATCHES.
During the first ten minutes of the women’s match, in which H.S.O.G. beat Public Service by six goals to three, Service dominated the play. H.S.O.G. recovered quickly, however, and it was not long before Mrs N. Kearns (2) and Miss E. Hill (1) had managed to net. After the whistle H.S.O.G. continued to press until three more goals had been added, Misses E. Thomas and E. Hill (2) being responsible. The scorers for Public Service were Miss A. Gomel- (2) and Miss I. Allen. The umpires were Messrs N. Hansen and W. Inkpen. IN OTHER CENTRES.
