FAST, OPEN DISPLAY.
Massey College and F’eilding Old Bays provided a fast ,open, spectacular game at Johnston Burk, i>eliding. i'la\ moved rapidly and both teams threw the hall about, occasionally with some recklessness." reliding Old Boys backs were the more cmerprising in attack, the opposition being inclined to wait to intercept passes rather than to go tor the man with the ball. Tile college inside backs were well catered tor by Blyth. though Hie wings, especially Robinson, were somewnai starved, itie rival packs worked very hard, Old Boys proving tiie more experienced. The final score, 18 points io 10 in favour or Old Boys, was a lair indication of the relative merits ot the teams. The lollowing took the field :

Coiiogo kicked off into a slight breeze on a dry field and carried play to the Old Boys’ twenty-five at once, rl. Dewe's speculator kick relieved and play went to College territory. Out to Mullins went a pass, but lie was coliared and eventually troin Pawson’s punt College forced. Bramwell got away aiterwards, only to be hauled down by Campbell close in, and, delaying lus pass, the chance went hr. Open play continued with Fed cling Old Boys attacking. Pierce secured .rom Brainweil's clearing kick and with a burst transferred play to Ok, Boys territory. ’Wilson clearing. Blythe and Francis operated cleanly to keep play open, though no advantage accrued and Old Boys were still the attackers. Front a loose dribble led by J. l)ewe Mullins scored in the corner. J. M. Finlay’s kick went outside the uprights. The next incident was a race between Freeman and Campbell tor the ball which had been kicked over the college line, Campbell lorcing down in time. Play went to the Old Boys base and Thurston got away dangerously, being hauled down close to the Old Boys line. Old Boys forced and thus cleared the position. Dewe, Pawson and J. M. Finlay were too clever for the opposition in a nice move which sent Finlay over by the posts anti the scorer goaled. A good punt bv Francis sent piny to the Old Boys, twenty-five, but College could not dwell there Jong, Pawson clearing. The college backs got away soon afterwards, and Stewart secured and beat a couple of opponents to pass in to Green, who scored under the bar. Francis goaled. Again College, throwing the ball about, burst through the opposition and play went to the Old Boys twenty-live. Pierce being the chief agent. A penalty against College enabled Old Boys to throw off the attack. A great run by Mullins and Henry Dewe took the ball to the college' base, where Bramwell took over and passed to the waiting Finlay, who scored under the posts and goaled. This was the score at halttime. . The second spell opened with a penalty to Old Boys, J. M. Finlay’s kick falling short. Play swept to Old Boys’ sml of the field, the blue forwards harrying the opposition and preventing the Old Boys hacks from getting into their stride. From midfield, Thurston and Stewart came through with a hurst of speed and Pearce received well out to race over and score a splendid try, Francis goaling. College had a narrow escape immediately after, when Brainwell’s centring kick sent the hall just nut of reach of his waiting forwards and Campbell received to clear nicely. Fine punts by Francis and Campbell threw out the attackers again, play going to midfield. Pawson got through the inside hacks to punt to Campbell, who sent the ball right oyer the Old Boys line with a strong kick and Old Boys forced. Play went downfiefd at once, and J. Dewe broke through the College forwards and passed to J. M. Finlay, who in turn handed to J. Finlay, who shot over and grounded, J. M. Finlay goaling. College .took a turn at attacking, the forwards pressing hard, and Ball received to have a dropkick at goal, the ball missing the crossbar and going over the dead-ball line. College continued to press. Blyth, Francis and Stewart in particular handling neatly, but failing to find any opening in the defence, Pawson shot through to punt the hall past Campbell and a great race ensued, 'Robinson beating Pawson to the force. College made a final thrust and reached the Old Boys line, and the hall rolled out to Robinson, who just failed to grasp it, and Wilson cleared the position. The game ended: Feilding Old Boys 18, Massey College 10. Mr C. Fade was the referee. For Feilding Old Boys, Jack Finlay was the outstanding forward, with J. M. Finlay and McLeod working very hard. In the backs, J. Dewe, Pawson and H. Dewe played well. Of the Massey College forwards, the most formidable were Terry, Irving and Thurston, and of the backs Blyth, Francis and Campbell were very serviceable.
