NEWBURY.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) NEWBURY, July 22.

A very enjoyable concert and dance were held in the Newbury Hall recently in aid of the school funds. The committee's thanks are duo to the following for providing such an excellent programme, every item being encored: Children’s chorus, verse speaking; vocal solo, Miss McGrath; humorous item, Mr R. Luke; duct (vocal), Messrs H. Pierard and G. M. Whitelock; skipping dance, Dawn Morgan; vocal solo, Mrs Grimshaw; part song (quintet), Messrs Taylor, Buglass, Packer, Clark, and Chetwynd; voed solo, Mr Taylor; elocutionary item, Mr Bagnall; vocal solo, Mr Pierard; dance, Miss; Muir; vocal solo, Mr Buglass; humorous item, Mr Luke; vocal solo, Mr Packer; comedy playette, “A Marriage Dcftjorangod,” by the To Arakura Women’s Institute, the following ladies taking part, Mesdames Stanley, Firth, W. Lower Johnston, E. FI. Ilaythorno, Wisker, Packwood, and J. Hume. A dance followed. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss McGrath and Master Lloyd Death. The duties of M.C. wero in the hands of Mr S. Death. A cake was kindly donated by Mr Fairoy. The hosts and hostesses were Messrs M. Hansen, S. Death, C. Wood, F. Verry, G. M. W hit clock, Ross, U. Purton and W. Penbcrthy, and Mesdames R. Purton, S. Death, M. Hansen, C. Wood, G. M. Whitelock, Maiden, W. Penbcrthy, ind Miss McGrath. The fortnightly euchre and danec was held on Thursday and there was' a good attendance. The following ladies were the prize-winners: Mrs J. Chcotham and Mrs Powell tied for first; they decided to divide the first and second prizes. Miss W. Burbury was third. Men, i\lr G. Burmister 1, Mr FI. Cribb 2, Mr Persson 3. A cake was kindly donated by Mrs ,E. W. Collins. The hosts and hostesses were Messrs A. McCulloch and M. Hansen, Mesdames Chcotham, E. A. Shaw, and W. Hamlin. Mr and Mrs J. McCauley have returned homo after spending a holiday in Hawke’s Bay. Mrs Joyce, of Okaiau-a, who has been tho guest of Mrs A. K. Simpson, has returned homo, accompanied by her daughter, who has just completed her training at the Hospital. Mr and Mrs Moycs, of New Plymouth, spent tho week-end with Mr and Mrs A. K. Simpson, of Rangitikei Line. Mr Burbury’s friends will be pleased to know that he has returned home from the Hospital, where he had_ been an inmate for some time. Mr N. Wood met with a distressing accident while fencing, a piece of wire breaking and inflicting a nasty wound to his hand which necessitated medical attention. ■A pleasing little ceremony took place at the school concert when, during an interval between the dances, Mr M. Hansen, chairman of the School Committee, made a presentation to Mr and Mrs G. Sanne on behalf of the committee, Parents’ Association and children of the school. Both Mr and Mrs Sanne, who were members of botli, ’nave been always ready and willing to do anything possible for the school and children, and the settlers of Newbury arc very sorry indeed to lose them. A hearty welcome, "is extended to Mr and Mrs K. Parks who have come to reside in Newbury. . ... Spring is with us once again and it is a pleasing sight to see the first spring lambs in the paddocks of Mr J. Linklator; the cows are now coming in fast, so the factories will soon bo working full-time again. During the last two weeks the weather has been much milder and the farms are at present in good order. * Mrs Maidens, the local school mistress, is at. present in Wellington attending the Teachers’ Conference.
