WANGANUI WIN.
MARGIN OVER TARANAKI. Per Press Association. WANGANUI, July 24, Wanganui defeated Taranaki in the annual Rugby match played here today and featured as part of the Wanganui Union’s golden jubilee programme. The final score was 28 points to 21. The game was played at a fast pace and the win was due to better forward play by Wanganui in the first spell, plus the ability of J. Morgan, the half-back, to drop-kick goals. Ho kicked two in the first part of the game and thus accounted for eight of the 13 points lead Wanganui had at half-time. The Taranaki side looked only a shadow of what was expected. It may be that all the players wore holding themselves in in anticipation of next Saturday’s encounter with the Springboks._ Sullivan at centre got few chances to display his genius owing to poor inside backs. He was able to show better form in the second spell. Collins, at full-back, was but a shadow of the former All Black custodian. In the forwards Taranaki were best served by Fowler, Fastier and Murphy. The Wanganui pack was led ably by Davidson and Lockett. Scorers for Wanganui were Morgan, two field goals, tries by Lockett, Burgess, Williams and Culpan. Morgan converted four tries. For Taranaki Sullivan scored two tries, and O’Dowda, Whetton, and McCleneghan one each. Clarke converted three. Collins had a bad off day nt kicking and he missed four easy chances at goal, Clarke being brought on to relieve him.
The match Yvas played under international rules to give Taranaki a proper feel of the kick to touch before meeting the Springboks.
