FARMERS’ POSITION.

CAMBRIDGE, July 24. “Farmers employing labour are worse off by 1.43 d per lb of butterfat for cheese and I.lßd per lb of butterfat for butter in comparison with the 1935-36 season, stated tbo chairman of directors of the Cambridgo Co-operative Dairy Company '(Mr W. Harbutt) in his report to shareholders of tho company at the annual meeting. “Increases in wages, -the rise in tho cost of farm materials and increased factory cofits amounted to 222 d for cheese and 2.09 d for butter,’ said Mr Harbutt. The people of the Dominion are reaching tho danger point in the burden of taxation,” said Mr Harbutt “for the Dominion is now more heavily taxed than either England or Australia It seems that the time is now opportune— f lediess is not givon—that tho people should refuse m iiav unemployment taxation and allow the * law of supply and demand to solve tH “Whether wo agree with the principles nf m-ice fixation or otherwise, one fact bo mentioned, that the arrangements made by the Marketing Department to for ward payments and all details have worked without any hitch throughout the whole year,” said Mr Harbutt, reporting ou tho yC “Manufactvlr ing costs have risen, which was antic“patri, but not to the same decree as was expected, chiefly owing to manufacturing requirements bOT^; bo “S bt before a serious rise occurred. A recipe for good farming which is 2000 years old was givon by Professor U G. Coopor, in tho course of a. lecture on tanning in Roman times given m HamTbo lecturer, reading from Goto s manual, quoted that writer as saying that ‘ guod tanning is ploughing, more plougning, and manuring.”
