OBITUARY.

MR JOHN ALGIE. The death recently occurred of Mr John Algie, of Pahiatua, and at the funeral on Sunday the cortege was one of the largest ever seen in the district, bearing testimony to the very high esteem in which he had been held, not only in Pahiatua, but also further afield. The late Mr Algie was a son .of Mrs W. S. Algie, of Palmerston North, and a brother of Mrs T. Saunders, also of Palmerston North.

Killen, Ireland, w'as Mr Algie’s birthplace, in 1878, and he was brought to New Zealand as an infant. His younger days were spent at Tinui, in the Wairarapa, and for 12 years ho was employed by Mr E. It. Mounsell as a rabbiter. At the age of 21 he went to Alfredton with his parents and, with the assistance of his brothers, felled the bush on “Hillside,” later to he the family home. Mr Algie married Miss Agnes Hillas, of Mauriceville, and, purchased a farm at Konini. In 1920 he took up a farm midway between Konini and Pahiatua, residing there until his death. The late Mr Algie was a valued member of the executive of the Pahiatua branch of the Farmers’ Union, and had been prominently associated with the Pahiatua A. and P. Association for the past 20 years, being elected a vice-president on several occasions. His passing will be a loss to the organisations with which he was conMr Algie is survived by his wife and two sons, Noel and Ivan, in addition to his mother, Mrs W. S. Algie (Palmerston North), two brothers, Colin Algie (Makairo), Walter Algie (Linton), and two sisters, Mrs T. Saunders’(Palmerston North) and Mrs H. Skeet (Masterton). The pall-bearers were Messrs E. W. Osborne, E. H. Lett, H. V. Stephens (Greytown), R. Low (Alfredton), H. Cotter, R. Harman (Haunui). The officiating clergyman was Rev. C. M. Roberts, both at the residence and at the graveside, lliere was a wealth of beautiful wreaths, including floral tokens from the Pahiatua branch of the Farmers’ Union and the Pahiatua A. and P. Association.
