NEW MOTOR VESSEL

DRAUGHT BELIEVED A RECORD. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, July 27. When the Federal Line’s new motorship Essex arrives at Auckland from Liverpool on Thursday, she will probably train a port record in mercantile draught. Filled to capacity and with a heavy deck cargo, the Essex will draw 33ft. -Tin. of water, a depth which. it is thought, has never been exceeded by a merchant ship in the history of the port. Considered to be the previous record holder, the Blue Star Line’s new motor-ship Melbourne Star, which arrived from Liverpool on May 25, was drawing 30ft <in, which will be easily exceeded bv the Essex. The battleship Hood, which visited Auckland with the Imperial Service Squadron, in 1024. drew 34ft. Her displacement is 42.100 tons. In spite of her heavy cargo, the Essex is making a very smart passage from Liverpool, which she cleared on the morning of June 30. A journey of 29 days approximates a record between England and Auckland, and it is unfortunate that the rough weather now being encountered has delayed her arrival by six hours.
