SUCCESSES DOUBTED
3.15 P.M. EDITION
CLAIMS BY CHINA. FIGHTING WITH JAPAN. (United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received Julv 29. 12.30 p.m. LONDON, July 28. The absence of confirmation of the Chinese “successes” combined with positive Japanese denials of them has caused foreign circles to doubt the authenticity of the Chinese reports of victories' against the Japanese. The Nanking Government has cabled the Chinese Embassy in London that Chinese troops have recovered Langfang and driven out the Japanese from Tungchow, where they captured three tanks and hoped shortly i 6 dominate the autonomous area of Hopei, of which Tungchow is the capital. The Chinese declare that they captured seven bombers when they took the Chaoehi&teng aerodrome, southward of Pekin.
Signs of an effective Japanese rally are perceptible, however, in tlie Chinese admission that the Japanese reoccupied Fengtai after a counter-attack lasting seven hours. They also doggedly counter-attacked at Lengfang. Telegrams from overseas Chinese deluging the Government urge resistance to the death and promise unlimited money supplies. The foreign forces at Pekin consist of 200 Lancashire Fusiliers, 500 American marines, 150 French and 100 Italian troops. The Japanese Embassyguard has been greatly augmented. There were 20,000 Japanese troops in the Pekin and Tientsin area on July 2.
