MUNICIPAL BAND.

The general committee of the Feilding Municipal Ban<jl met last evening, when Mr T. Collins preaided. Notice was received that the band’s objection to being added as a party to the musicians’ award would be heard at the next sitting of the Arbitration Court, and the question of representation was left in the hands of the chairman and secretary. The report of the conductor (Mr J. L. Fleetwood) stated that several public appearances had been made by the band in June, and practices had been well, attended. A general improvement in the band’s activities had been noted. With the expected addition of several senior pla.yers, the band would come up to contest strength. New instruments were required, as at present there was a shortage wdiich retarded the acceptance of any more junior playei'6. With the idea of encouraging local players, a competition for quartettes and solos was being held for which several medals had already been promised. The question of instruments and augmenting the supply of music and music stands was left in the hands of the conductor for a further report. Mr P. P. Stevens, who acted as a visitor for June and July, reported marked progress 60 far as the band was concerned. Rehearsals had been well attended and the quality of the music was highly satisfactory. Arising out of the conductor’s report the matter of taking part in the contest to be held in Palmerston North next year was held over for consideration at the next meeting.
