The meeting opened with community singing led by Mr T. P. Henderson, followed by a Scripture reading, “Paul on Charity,” by Mr J. Murray, M.A. Songs were rendered by Mr H. AVoodhouse and Mr AV. B. Tennent, both having to respond to encores. Musical items were contributed by Mr A. Sundborn on the steel guitar and Mr L. Haynes on the violin, which were much appreciated, both having to respond to the applause. The series of talks on “Living European Statesmen” was in the hands of Mr J. C. A T oung, who chose for his subject, “Stalin.” dealing with it in his usual inimitable style. His efforts met with a great reception and shows the talks are being appreciated. The main speaker of the evening was Mr E. Aaganrd on “A Trip to the Antarctic.” He treated his subject in a very concise manner, tracing the whaling industry from its inception in the 16th century away in the Far North, when it was carried on almost entirely by Norwegians and British whalers. He drew attention to the fact that whaling is now carried on practically bv all nations of the world. He expressed the opinion that unless some understanding was arrived as by the nations the whale would eventually become extinct, as the modern methods of fast chasers and machine guns took a very heavy toll of the whales compared with the old method of hand harpoon and spear. The talk was received with applause and Mr Aagaard was accorded a hearty vote of thanks on the motion of the chairman. , Mr F. McLaehlan officiated at the piano.
