ARRESTS IN GERMANY
FORMER UNION LEADERS. REVIVAL OF ACTIVITIES. “GRAVE CRIMES” REVEALED. (United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received July 31, 11.30 a.m. ’ BERLIN, July 30. Tho Gestapo (secret police) have arrested 40 persons in a drive against former Trade Union leaders for allegedly reviving union activities in defiance of the Nazi Labour Front. The principal arrest is that of Herr Schart.schwert, former leader of tho Locomotive Drivers’ Union, who had secretly organised meetings ill the guis© of convivial gatherings and also published a stencilled broadsheet and collected subscriptions, which is a grave crime. , The most extensive underground activities are indicated by the fact that the Gestapo have already made contact with from 700 to 800 locomotive unionists.
