(From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON, July 30. The deputy-Mayor (Cr A. E. Hyde) presided at thfi Borough Council meeting this week. Owing to illness the Mayor (Mr E. Butt] was granted a month’s leave of absence. Tho Minister of Internal Affairs wrote asking the council to organise suitable celebrations for Arbor Day. It was arranged to carry out a ceremony in the Domain; planting ornamental shrubs, and to invite the school children to bo present. Cr Hyde stated that be had arranged with tho business people to instal community lighting and asked if the council would join in tho scheme. Ho suggested that the town might be made more attractive by the lighting of tho AVar Alemoral, and this is to bo considered after further details have been obtained. Tho Shannon branch of the Plunket Society thanked the council for the grant of £2 2s and the Kairanga County Council forwarded £4l 12s Id. being the council’s portion of . heavy traffic fees collected. As a protection to the council rubbish dump it ucis decided to plant willow tress. It was pointed out that, in one or two cases in the borough drainage from homes was flowing into the stormwater channels. The Mayoress (Mrs E. Butt), who took a bad turn last week, is still in bod and the Mayor (Mr E. Butt) is now able to get about for a few hours daily after a severe bout of sciatica and eye troub.c
