AUCTIONEERS’ REPORT. Abraham and Williams, Ltd., report on the Fcilding side: —A large entry of sheep of all classes again came forward, the entry being comprised of breeding ewc6 of all ages, with a good penning of both ewe and wether hoggets. The quality of the ewe and wether hoggets submitted was above the average, and consequently a strong sale resulted for tin’s class of sheep. The best woolly wether hoggets carrying a lot of condition sold up to 265, good mcduiui sorts from 22s 6d to 245; ewe hoggets also sold readily, realising as high as 38s 6d for top sheep, good. medium sorts selling at from 30s to 355. One particularly choice lino of 4-th, 6-th, 4 and 5-yr Romney ewes running with stud Romney rains, sold by us on account, of J. L. Camplin, Waituna, realised the good price of £2 2s 6d, these being an outstanding lino of Romney owes. Fat sheep again met a strong market, the supply by no means satisfying the demand, and here we report the highest prices realised so far this year for fat ewes, some excellent quality sheep being penned. A good yarding of cattle came to hand, these being comprised chiefly of cows ex the dairy, and here we report a strong sale, with values well up on last week’s quotations. A largo entry of dairy cows and heifers came to hand, and for these wo report a sound sale throughout for both classes. Several pens of yearling heifers (Jersey) came to hand, and for well-grown quality sorts a strong sale resulted. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., report Capacity entries were offered in all departments. Considering the lateness of the season, the entry of breeding ewes was surprisingly good, both in numbers and quality, and the market was fully firm on late rates. Store lambs considerably exceeded ihe advertised numbers. Both ewes and wethers of top quality sold about Is per head better than last week’s, whilst medium to good land’s which were in the majority, hardly held at last week’s values. The over-supply wa= obviously the reason for this. In the la* sheep section ewes took a sharp rise, wotiiore were slightly better, and lambs about on a. par with the last sale. Boncp concomprised the bulk of the store catt.o an try, and values wero very firm throughout. Fat cattle, of which there was a capacity entry, took a further rise on last week’s market. GRAIN AND PRODUCE. Per Press Association. ■ CHRISTCHURCH, July 30. The Canterbury grain and produce markets remain exceptionally quiet, even, for this time of the year. Indeed, taking it all round, 1937 has been ono of the dullest seasons in the history of the trade in recent years. The unfavourable weather in the autumn has had a lot to do with this. Tho potato position continues to bo unsatisfactory. Northern requirements have been filled for Ihe time being, and the apparent petering out of tho South American demand lias bad a depressing effect. Prices are about tho same as earlier in the week. Australian importations have left the chaff market largely lifeless. There is the usual seasonal quietness in tho oats market. There is a good demand for fowl wheat, but very littlo is offering. Small seeds are still very quiet, but it is expected that the spring demand will set in immediately after Grand National week. Indications are that there will be a fair sowing of grass in Canterbury in the spring, and if the North Island gets a decent dry spell there is bound to be a rush to. sow. Big areas arc being reported to bo ready for seeding once the weather allows farmers to start. Stocks of all classes of small seeds, particularly perennial ryegrass, arc reported to be very light throughout the Dominion because of the very poor crops harvested last autumn. There is at present no overseas demand for small seeds, the prospects of good crops in Great, Britain having doubtless influenced the situation.
