RUGBY FOOTBALL

KIA TOA v. OLD BOYS. (Continued from page 9.) Play had only been in progress for a few minutes when Kia Toa infringed, and from a good position Betteridge goaled. Kia. Toa attacked strongly, but a punt found an open space in their backs, Plank racing through to snap up tlie ball on the bounce and transfer to Innes, who was thrown out in the corner after making a bold bid for the line. Kia Toa brought play back to the other end, where their forwards failed in attempts to burst tlieir way through, though Carr went dangerously close to the line after receiving from Was lev. Kia Toa hammered away for a. long time until Old Boys cleared. G. Wasley was caught in possession 1 and first Fleming and , then Todd nearly took the ball through the disorganised defenders. Kia Toa were penalised and Betteridge failed narrowly to land another goal. Old Boys led by 3 points to nil at the interval. Breaking through when play was resumed, O’Dea made a long run for Old Boys before he was pulled down. Carr then got away for Kia Toa, and the situation looked very dangerous for Old ■ Boys until Lc Quesne came across fast, I took the ball from the opposing forwards, a.nd cleared beautifully. Kia Ton stormed Old Boys’ line, the forwards, with Beard prominent, making desperate efforts to cross, and finally Barnao filing himself over in the corner. McKenzie, taking the kick right from the side-line, made a magnificent effort to convert, but the ball struck the angle of the post and cross-bar, ■ rebounding on to the field. With the ball in motion again, Irvine despatched Lines on the blind side for the winger to make a great run to the corner. There was a sensational change in the run of the play when G. Wasley intercepted, made a good run and, blocked by Betteridge, kicked straight i ahead. Simpson came up at express 1 speed to race three defenders 40 yards for the ball; he got there first and scooped it up to dive over by the posts. Carr missed an easy kick, and a few minutes later McKenzie missed just as good a chance to land a penalty goal. Showing more dash than at any other stage of the game, the Old Boys hacks, invading Kia Toa territory, began to throw the ball about in great style, first Le Quesne and then Lines showing up, but the defence, though severely tested, held. Carr broke clean away with the ball for Kia Toa, but there was no one in support. He next 1 tossed a. long pass to G. Wasley, who 1 was pushed out in the corner. It was : Kia Toa’s turn on the offensive, and Thomas opened up several attacks which kept Old Boys very busy in thenown territory, but the match ended with the score : Kia Toa C, Old Boys 3. Mr A. Ward was the referee.
