ST. PATRICK’S V. FEILDING

VISITORS’ DAY OFF. The senior match at Johnston Park, Feilding, between St. Patrick’s and Feilding drew only a moderate attendance, and although the visitors had the advantage of a fair breeze in the opening spell they failed to score and throughout the game only oneo did they cross Feilding’s line. The game was a scraggy one, there being no spectacular movements by either side. Feilding emerged with 16 points to their credit as against St. Patrick’s o. Ten minutes before the first spell ended Hehir suffered an injury to his head and was escorted from the field, and was later taken away for medical attention. The teams were:—

St. Patricks.—Richards, Inglis, Hampton, R. Gillespie, M. Gillespie, Hehir, Edlin, Kcllehcr, Fowler, Sherman, Madgwick, Ross, Powell, O’Dca, E. Fell.

Feilding.—Stuckey, McKenzie, Bowyer, Kitchen, It. Dewe, AValdin, R. Brown, Spilman, ltosser, Henson, Sullivan, Nicholson, Flight, Morrison, Newman.

.The visitors kicked oil and immediately launched an attack. Might and Waldin in turn got offside _ and the penalties further improved St. Patrick’s position. A series of line-outs in Feiiding’s twenty-five occurred, the last of which enabled the visitors to set their backs in motion to draw play to the other side of the field, where Richards sent the ball out ten yards distant from Feiiding’s goal line. Feilding, however, defended well, and counter-attacked. The forward rush was halted by Richards, who promptly found the lino. O’Dea broke away and play reverted to Feiiding’s territory. Again the latter team withstood the strain anl their forwards dribbled the ball upheld in fine style, but Hampton stopped a further invasion. Feilding got out of position and Powell took a long shot at goal. Tho kick fell short and tho ensuing play saw Waldin and Bowyer paired in a nice run to midfield. The ball did not remain long in neutral territory, as tho greens pressed forward again and drew play- to within five yards of the home team’s goal line. Waldin cleared. The greens were penalised for a scrum infringement and play moved quickly to a yard or two out from the visitors’ goal line, where Kitchen secured from Waldin and crossed the line to force, but a green player’s hands were' also on the ball when it touched tho ground. Play reverted to Feilding territory, from which Waldin made a nice run which, however, was spoilt by a forward pass. Feilding moved up again, and from a serum Hight sent, the ball to Waldin, who again passed forward and upset the advance. The home team came again, Waldin sending the ball to the side-line with an excellent kick. From the throw-in R. Dewe further improved the position, and Kitchen, the winger, made an opening with a nico run infield before handing on to Waldin, who evaded the defenders and scored beside the uprights five minutes before tho first spell ended. Bowyer converted. Kitchen was penalised for holding on to the ball too long and Powell’s kick failed. St. Patrick’s made the pace until the bell went,' but were unable to penetrate. On the resumption, St. Patrick’s made a forward rush in which hell handled freely before handing on to Edlin, who carried on and then handed bn to Inglis, who was in a handy position and successfully evaded the defenders to score. Edlm converted. Feilding attacked . strongly and Richards’s clearing kick was accepted bv Kitchen, who cut through to score. Waldin’s kick failed. A penalty try was awarded Feilding a moment later when the hall passed behind the green goal line and Newman, who was racing to touch down, was obstructed. Bowyer eonveited. The visitors at this stage appeared to be weakening. Hight, almost got over the visitors’ goal line from a throw-in*, tho defenders just managing to account for the nivadei in time. Waldin made an opening for McKenzie a moment later and the latter scrambled over in the far corner. Wald in’s kick missed. Feilding had their opponents well weakened and the game ended soon after with the scores: Feilding 16, St. Patrick’s o. Mr A. Gordon refereed.
