TE KAWAU SCHOOL FOOTBALL

ENTHUSIASM OF BOYS. (Contributed A Nominations, trials, teams, All Blacks, Springboks—of these we read much, but what of those players of to-day who in 1921 were not yet horn? In Te Ka.wau they are full of enthusiasm. The first round of the schools' competition has been completed, with the teams as follows: —Glen Oroua, 10 points; Bongotea, 7; Bangiotu, 6; Oroua Downs, 5; Kopanc, 2; Sanson, 0. Kopane and Sanson now drop out, leaving the other four teams to play a second round to decide which shall hold the Penny Banner as champions for 1937 and which shall hold the Bunner-up Cup. All the first round games were played according to programme, not one team defaulting. When one considers that the district covered extends from Sanson to Oroua Downs and Bangiotu, and that some eight basketball teams have also to be catered for • weekly, the fact that the essential transport has always been forthcoming, speaks volumes for the support accorded the country boys and girls, by their good friends the car drivers. ' Not satisfied wtili one journey in the week, some 30 boys were assembled at Kopane on Saturday last. After a trial game, in which last year’s Manawatu representative forward, Beg. Mudford, was outstanding, the following bovs were selected to play Palmerston North, at the Showgrounds on August 7 : Backs.—Vealo, C. Webb, Garner, Hunt, Imrie, Bowe, Dorn, Murphy, Bachelor. Forwards. —Mudford, J. Webb, Edmunds, Sanson, Cook, Larkin, Mossop, Gates, Gill and Lyons. It is regretted that the team cannot have a week in camp or even a game or two together, but this is a busy week, with August 4 in the middle. After they have watched the Springboks on Wednesday—some 150 Te Kawau boys are attending that match—and played their competition games on Friday, who knows what they may do when they meet Palmerston North on Saturday ? All Blacks, every one, preparing for the next tour of Africa!
