WANGANUI GO UNDER.
TOURING CANTERBURY TEAM. Per Press Association. WANGANUI, Aug. 1. The Canterbury Rugby team opened their short North Island ttour to-day by defeating AA'anganui 12 —3 in a match which lacked sparkle in the first spell, but livened up in the second. The Canterbury backs were too fast for the home side and made use of a hard-working pack of forwards. Wanganui, on the other hand, had the. territorial advantage, but lacked thrust in the rearguard to win. The forwards played a hard game, particularly in tlie second spell, but the undoing of all this vim was weak tackling by the home hacks, who let the visitors away in surprise movements. Pawson (centre), • Brook (first fiveeighth) until injured, and Carmichael (left winger) were impressive in the Canterbury backs, with Nolan a very safe custodian. In the pack Milliken, AVilliams and AVhillans were prominent. For Wanganui, the forwards, Davidson and Lockett, played outstanding games, while D. Thompson at fullback was a find, kicking and tackling splendidly. Iv. Welsh had an off-day all round. Tries were scored for Canterbury by Brooks, Carmichael, Eathorne and Cole, none being converted. Barton, who played a splendid game for \\ 7 anganui in the backs, scored the only try for the home .team.
