ADVENTURES IN SURF

SUNDAY ISLAND LANDING. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 2. Some exciting minutes were spent in the surf off Sunday Island when tlie launch of the Maui Pom are endeavoured to land the stores and survey equipment through the surf on the ship's recent, visit. The. Maui Pomare called at Sunday Island on its way to Samoa from New Zealand. With a heavy swell pounding on the beach, the only way to get ihe stores ashore was to float them into the surf and, with that object. a launch, in Ihe charge of the chief officer. Air Holden, went as near the line of the breakers as possible with the idea of sending lines ashore by rockets. The firet attempt was not successful, and on the following day another was made. T his tinie a big swell broke outside the ordinary breaker line and the launch was caught. Two Australian tourists on the Mam Pomare, ATessrs K. Hopkin.s and H. Nicliolls,. said that the launch look two seas over her side; four men had to take to the oars, and it was largely due to the fine seamanship of Air Holden that the launch was quickly pulled out of trouble. The Maui Pomare had to make a second call at the island to complete the landing of the stores and to pick up the five Sunday Island settlers who were dissatisfied with island life and wished to return.
