LETTER OF FRIENDSHIP.
MR CHAMBERLAIN AND DUCE. ROME, Aug. 1. Replying to a cordial message from Signor Mussolini which the Italian Ambassador (Count Grandi) delivered last Tuesday, the British Prime Minister (Mr Neville Chamberlain) sent an important communication to the Duce which is described as a personal letter of friendship. The text is not disclosed, but an official announcement that the letter had arrived in Rome was well received in Italian official circles, reviving hopes of an ItaloBritish rapprochement. It is understood that Mr Chamberlain reaffirms the principles of an Anglo-Italian gentlemen’s agreement, and emphasises that Britain and Italy have not conflicting interests in the Mediterranean. He states that both countries are anxious to limit the Spanish conflict. The newspapers are even more hopeful of a non-intervention settlement, which yesterday they deflated Russia had killed.
