MANAAVHENUA’S DISPLAY. Marked by tremendous enthusiasm, the encounter between the Springboks and Manawhenua, at Palmerston North, on August 17, 1921, when the former won by three points to nil, was a hard-fought gamp, which will be recalled by many this week. '1 he home team were led by IT. Jacob, the big Horowhenua Maori forward, and though it was a heavy one, some ol the Springboks, too, were giants, 'the ground was in good condition, and the match was watched by about 12,000 spectators. The teams were: Manawhenua.—Full-back, Marshall; three-quarters, Glendinning, Swainson, Leeder; five-eighths, Ford, McDonald; half. A. Maire; forwards, Carroll, Bevan, ITarkness, Dustin, Broughton, Galpin, Moynihan, Jacob. Springboks.—Full-back, De A’illiers ; three-quarters, Zeller, ■ Strauss, Sendin, Henry Morkel; halves, J. P. Micliau, De Kock; forwards, Pienaar (captain), Du Plessis, Ellis, Royal Morkel. A 7 an Rooyen, Mostert, Ollivier, Scholtz. Ten minutes after tho opening of the match, Zeller scored the only try of the game, in the corner. Manawhenua’s subsequent tactics of keeping the hall low and finding the line when danger threatened slowed down the Springboks. There were periods of tense excitement in great forward rallies, Manawhenua doing most of the attacking in the first spell, with Dustin and Jacob prominent in the rallies; and the Springbok line was just as often in danger os was that of tho home side, which received an ovation on leaving the field.
