Hon. Rangi Mawhete, who has disposed of his property at Awalu’ii, is taking up his residence temporarily in the city. Mr J. T. McDonald, of Carroll Street, is at present spending a holiday in Waverley as the’ guest of Mr A. Wallace. A cable message from. Berne (Switzerland) .announces the death of M. Louis Daplles, president of the Nestles Company. Rt. Rev. Dr. Brodie, Bishop of Christchurch, is to leave Christchurch on August 19 for Australia to attend the National Synod in Sydney. Hon. A. Hamilton. Leader of the New Zealand Nationalist Party, who arrived in Palmerston North yesterday afternoon, left early this morning for Wellington. Mr S. S. Dean, chairman of the management committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union, arrived in Palmerston North to-day and is staying at the Imperial Hotel. Mr C. Louisson, of Palmerston North, leayes this week on a short visit to Australia. He will be accompanied on his return by Mi’s Louisson, -who has been visiting their son in Brisbane. At a meeting of the executive of the Palmerston North branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, Mr F. Hickey was elected to fill the vacancy caused by the departure from Palmerston North of Mr J. G. Crooks who had held the position for the past four years.
Mr G. F. McAmpline hag been a.ppointed Clerk of the House of Commons in succession to Sir Horace Dawkins, who lias resigned after 45 years spent in the service of the House. The Prime Minister, on behalf of the members, paid a tribute to his service.— British Official Wireless.
When leave of absence was granted Cr W. Mouldey from the meeting of the Palmerston North City Council, last evening, the Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansford) said that although Cr Mouldey had 'had some bad turns in his illness the reports that day were better. A message of sympathy had been conveyed to him, with the hope that he would soon recover. Travelling with the Springboks team as the official representative of the New Zealand Rugby Union is Mr F. Glasgow, of Wellington. Mr Glasgow was a member of the original All Blacks who toured Great Britain in 1905. He again represented New Zealand in 1908. Mr Glasgow was formerly a Taranaki representative and he is also well-known in Hawke’s Bay, where he played for several seasons. Captain A. W. Pearse, who has represented The Port- of London Authority in Australia and New Zealand for the past 18 years, will retire for age reasons on June 30, 1938. Mr T. R. Toovev, chief assistant to the general manager (Sir David Owen) will arrive at the end of the current year and will take over control at the end of next June’. Mr Toovey paid a visit to Australia a few years ago.
