AMERICA’S CUP.
HOW SECOND RACE WAS LOST,
NEW YORK, Aug. 2
The Endeavour’s eclipse in the second race for the America’s Cup has practically ended interest ill the series with the exception of the distance by which the Ranger will win the remaining races. The reception given to Mr H. Vanderbilt as he crossed the line was hysterically vociferous. Experts feel that the Endeavour’s failure to hold the lead when in the better position proves that the crew Or the yacht lacks race-winning quality. It is pointed out that the Endeavour lost the advantage owing to a disastrous tack by which she was almost brought to a standstill. Mr Sopwith is taking advantage of the one day’s rest, during which the Endeavour will be overhauled. The Now York Times ynchting editor, mentioning the suggestion that the Endeavour may he altered, acidly comments that “the installation of an engine might help.” Rumours that Mr Sopwith is so discouraged that he may retire from the series are denied. Mr Sopwith expressed the opinion that a theory that the Endeavour’s keel picked tip a lobster-pot may explain her failure. The keel is to be examined at daybreak. “I was pretty sure the Endeavour would win until the Ranger crept up,” Mr Sopwitli said. “The Endeavour went dead. It was the most astonishing thing I ever saw. We lost 10 minutes in five miles.” HULL FOUND CLEAN. Received August 4, 11.2 a.m. NEW YORK, Aug. 3. After an examination of the Endeavour’s hull, which was found to be clean, Mr Sopwith said: “There must be some explanation for what happened. We were going along nicely and holding well into the wind, when suddenly she began to lose way. We eased off and the Ranger sharpened, pointing close to windward ana forcing us back. We lost the .race right there.”
