CHAMBER OF COMERCE.
MATTERS OF CIVIC INTEREST. STREET RE-NUMBERING. Various routine matters, among others, were dealt with at the monthly meeting of the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce, last evening. Those present were Messrs A. J. Graham (chairman), C. N. Rabone, H. L. Cuninghame, J. S. Hornblow, J. A. Nash. J. H. Stevens, K. A. Henderson, H. E. Townshend, L. feeator. G. Clark, and F. G. Opie. Four new members were elected. Comment was made that it would be to the advantage of auctioneers and such persons if time-payment agreements above a certain figure were registered, preferably at the nearest Supreme Court. It was pointed out that there would prpbably be strong opposition from certain quarters, but on the other hand it was contended that the advantages to bo gained by giving a means of determining whether the articles were subject to a lien or not would outweigh _ the disadvantages. The meeting decided to hold the matter over for a month, the secretary in the meantime to gather iuformation on the subject. Attention was drawn by Mr Steveils to difficulties attending tne lag of time between the change of street numbers by the City Council and the acquisition of familiarity with the new numbers through the publication of the telephone directory or other such compilations. After a general discussion the meeting decided to take no action, the president remarking that those finding themselves inconvenienced “would just have to grin and bear it,” Complimentary reference was made hv Mr Hornblow to the action of the City Council in “having legible numbers put up on the gates’ of residences in certniu streets. Other members agreed that the re-numbermg of streets had also brought about an improvement in the style of numbering. Suggestions were placed before the meeting by Mr Henderson that an undertaking in Bundaberg, Australia, might well be followed at this centre. He said that a visitor to the Australian town had brought back a booklet of 40 pages which had been obtained in a restaurant there, giving a description and a list of the principal sights and attractions of the town. Mr Henderson is to bring the booklet before the next meeting of the chamber, and in the meantime the secretary is to go into the broad aspects of the production of such a booklet for Palmerston North.
