A TRAFFIC DANGER.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —Recently a traffic dome has been placed on Foxton Line just south of West Street crossing. Now these domes are very necessary, but this one in its present position is a greater source of danger than that which it was intended to avert. Owing to the dangerous slope of the roadway and the obscured view it is very difficult for south-bound traffic to negotiate this dome. Unless the roadway can 'be levelled or -banked, or the dome moved farther along Foxton Line where it can be readily seen by traffic mounting the railway line, it will not be long before a fatal accident is caused by a motor vehicle skidding across the footpath, which at this point is a halting place for pedestrians, especially children, who contemplate crossing. At present unwary drivers on mounting the railway crossing suddenly become aware of the dome, swerve and apply the brakes in a vain attempt to get round it. Others, following the rule of “safety first,” simply drive straight over it. Of course, in wet weather the danger is much accentuated - . I trust that those responsible for the placing of this dome will have something done to minimise the danger, and I thank you, sir, for allowing me to issue this warning to both motorists and pedestrians. —I am, etc., C. C. HILLS. To AVanaka Road, Aug. 3, 1937.
