WEATHER IN JULY

LOW RAINFALL. FEW FROSTS REGISTERED. The rainfall experienced in Palmerston North during July, 1.28 inches, was much below the normal fall for that month, 3.27 inches, states Mr E. J. Werry in his notes on the weather for last month. It was less than onethird of the rainfall for July of last year and the lowest monthly rainfall since September, 1934. Temperatures, both average and extreme, approximated very closely to the normal. There were only five irosts, as compared with eight during July of last year. Details of the records are:— RAINFALL. Mean minimum temperature in shade, 39.2 deg (38.4 deg). Mean minimum temperature on grass, 36.2 deg (35.4 deg). Extremes. Highest maximum reading, 58dcg (63deg). Lowest minimum reading, 28deg (27deg). Lowest reading on grass, 25deg (24deg). FROSTS. Number of days, 5. Most severe, 7deg on 7th and Bth. (Last, year, 8 frosts, the most severe being Bdeg on 10th.) WINDS. (Observations taken at 9 a.m.) Light to gentle breeze, 2S days. Moderate to fresh breeze, 2 days. Strong wind, 1 day. Direction. —From North, 0; northeast, 0; east, 3 days; south-east, 9 days; south, 0; south-west, 0; west, 3 (lays; north-west, 16 days.
