NAVAL PROGRAMME
EXPECTATIONS FOR 1938. BRITAIN’S ACTIONS FORECAST. INCREASE IN PERSONNEL. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received August 5, 9.45 a.m. LONDON, Aug. 4. Mr Hector Bywater, writing in the Daily Telegraph, expects that the 193 S naval rearmament programme will be equal to the extensive building of 1937, when 664,000 tons were being constructed, which is believed to be a peace time record. Mr Bywater adds; “Well informed circles anticipate that in 1938 from three to five further battleships, six or seven cruisers and a proportionate quota of destroyers, submarines and smaller craft will be constructed. It is also expected that there will be another increase in personnel of at least 125,000, including the manning of the largely increased Fleet Air Arm, in which during the next four years the aircraft borne by carriers and cata-pult-ship will rise from 230 to 550.”
