FAMOUS PATHOLOGIST.
COMPLAINT BY COUNSEL. Sir Bernard Spilsbury, the famous pathologist of Scotland Yard, and the principal scientific witness in many murder trials, was referred to in an unusual way during the- trial at the Old Bailey, London, of a young man who was charged with the manslaughter of his sweetheart. Counsel tor the defence said: “Sii Bernard Spilsbury has now become a! most automatically a god in these Courts, because 110 one is ever allowed to disbelieve anything he says. I do not say that Sir Bernard should be disbelieved, because he is a perfectly fair witness, but can lie never make a mistake?” Mr Justice Finlay (to the jury): It is obvious common sense that on a matter of medical skill, the jury will, to a considerable extent, be guided by those who are expert in thc> matter. But you are not bound to take Sir Bernard Spilsbury’s opinion any more than anyone else’s. He is, of course, a person of grea.t eminence, great fairness and groat experience. Accused was found guilty and recommended to mercy. The case for the pro sedition rested considerably on medical evidence.
