TWO MEN FINED.
OFFENCE AT DANCE. “This kind of conduct is a constant source of annoyance, and it is time that some of these men were taught a lesson,” stated Senior-Sergeant Mclntyre, in the Magistrate's Court to-day, when Bartholomew Cox, a labourer, aged 44. of Hunterville, and James Hirini, a Maori labourer, aged 32, of Foxton each appeared before Messrs J. A. Nash and T. R. Lees, J.P.’s, on a charge of disorderly behaviour while drunk at a dance hall last evening. - .... Mr McTntyre said that Hirini was in a drunken condition and wanted to fight sonic of the officials. They attempted to dissuade him, but be bad to be forcibly removed from tho ball bv a constable and was subsequently arrested. Cox had behaved in a very similar manner. When remonstrated with for leaning on and damaging decorations, lie resented it, and wanted to fight the proprietor. “These sort of men are posts at such functions,” added the senior-sergeant, “and the pleasant nature of them is marred by disturbances created by irrational persons. I would ask for a substantial penalty.” Cox did not appear, but Hirini was informed by the Bench that his action had been deplorable, though lie .had behaved since his last offence ton years ago. Mr Nash said it was a serious matter at a dance of repute, such as that conducted by the Kia Ton Club, and at which Springboks were present as guests. That sort of thing must be stopped. Each defendant was fined £2, in default 48 hours’ imprisonment.
