INCREASING IMPORTS
MANUFACTURERS’ INTENTIONS. COLLECTION OF THE FACTS. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND. Aug. 4. In order to provide specific information for the Government of the degree of embarrassment caused to manufacturers by the rising tide of imports, the Auckland Manufacturers’ Association has issued a questionnaire to its members, asking for full details of the present condition of their businesses and the prospects for the near future. The president of the association, Mr F. N. Ambler, in a covering letter, refers to the allegation nmde_ by the Minister on July 28 that the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation had over-stated its case in publicly complaining of the effect of imports on local secondary industry. “This statement seems to show that the Minister cannot be fully aware of the seriousness of the position,” the letter continues, “and unless we can supply more direct evidence it seems evident that the Government is still prepared to wait until manufacturers are absolutely swamped by overseas products before taking action.” He adds that in his executive’s opinion the position, so far from being over-stated, can be stated in yet more definite terms.
