TALKINGS MISSION.

THE EPSOM HANDICAP. CUPS DEPENDENT ON SHOWING. "I have decided definitely that Taking's spring mission will be tho Epsom Handicap, Whether he will then proceed to tackle either tho Caulfield or the Melbourne Cup will depend upon his milo form at Randwick," stated tho owner, Mr A. E. Cooper, at Rosebery (Sydney) last week. "Talking will have his first race in the Liverpool Handicap or ■ the Warwick Stakes at Warwick Farm on August 28. Then, with a race perhaps at the Tattersall's meeting and at Rosehill, and with plenty of solid work ( he should be perfectly fiit for his big mile test," added Mr Cooper. Tho backing of Talking has provided an unexpected spring sensation (says a Sydney writer), and unless his early spring form is unsatisfactory ho will start a hot favourite. Sydney bookmakers dodare that Talking represents a £IO,OOO liability straight out, and Melbourne bookmakers, too, havo been caught in the

commission. One Talking problem, however, remains unsolved. His connections have not yet secured a rider for him, but that is never difficult with a first-class horse, and neither Mr Cooper ' nor the trainer, Fred Williams, will rush into an engagement. Last autumn, before Talking went wrong, Maurice McCarten was engaged for the colt, but. ho will rido Talking this spring only if anything should bappne to Gold Rod. McCarten is definitely tied up for Gold Rod, and although tho two great colts will not clash in all Epring races, it would bo inadvisable to have McCarten on Talking one day and then another jockey the next. Talking is easy to handle, but constant changing of riders does not always help a horse.
