RUGBY LEAGUE
TOURISTS WELCOMED. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Aug. 4, A promise that the Australian Rugby League team visiting Auckland on its way to England and France would provide tho best games possible in Auckland because members bad been assured they would not be sent home on account of pn juries, was made by the beam’s manager, Mr Harry Sunderland, at a mayoral reception accorded the team in the Town Hall this afternoon. The visitors were welcomed bv the deputy-mayor (Hon. B. Martin) the president of the New Zealand League Council (Mr J. A. Redwood) and a representative of tho Alaori race (Rev. P. Panapa). The welcome was heartily endorsed by officials and supporters of the Auckland Rugby League. Mr Panapa, speaking on behalf of the Maori race, expressed groat appreciation that the Rugby League had arranged for a match between the Kangaroos and the Maori team to be played at Auckland. “We are all one people,” he said, “and we appreciate this courtesy.” After the responses of Air Sunderland, Air R. Savage, business manager, and AV. Prigg, captain, Air Panapa led
a Alaori haka, to which the visitors responded with an aboriginal war-cry.
TOTTEY TO' AIAKE TRIP. Received August 5, 8.5 a.m. SYDNEY. Aug. 5. Fred Tottey, who previously had withdrawn from the touring Rugby League team owing to an ankle injury, will now sail on Thursday, all arrangements for his departure for New Zealand and England with the Australian Rugby League team having been made. The Board of Control is meeting tomorrow night and it will radio permission to Tottey to join the Kangaroos.
