The monthly mooting of tho School Committee was held on Monday evening, Air Best presiding. Messrs Bovis, Ostler, Cole, Campbell, and McDonald (headmaster) were also present. The Education Board advised that, in view of the fact that since September, 1933, the committee has been paying a wage iu excess of tho rate paid in 1931. it is not. affected by the legislation which was paesed this year. Replying to a letter from the committee regardin'' liability of committees in cases of aci,dent resulting from use of swings, etc., on school grounds the secretary of the hoard said that the board does not approve of tho erection of apparatus such as swings, etc. Further, that school committees arc legally liable for accidents duo to negligence on their part, or on the part of any persons placed by them in charge of such apparatus; the board itself cannot admit liability in caees of accidents. Tho chairman and secretary were authorised to aseeriain if the committee can bo indemnified against accidents, otherwise the apparatus is to bo dismantled. The hoard advised tliat tenders had been accepted for the installation of septic tank, reconstruction of fireplaces, and tho erection of bicycle stalls. The headmaster reported that the roll wa3 308. Four pupils had been selected for the Horowhenua school Rugby representatives. The children wore still arranging functions for the swimming baths, two recent entertainments resulting in £7 and £ll Os 3d being received. By this means £3O had been collected. Mr McDonald stated that he had received advice of his appointment to the Berhainpore School, and expected to take up hie duties at. the new term. The chairman complimented Ml- McDonald on his appointment, and referred to the magnificent part he had taken, in the local school. His promotion was to a higher graded school and no had the committee’s best wishes {or his future. The chairman also referred ro tho active part taken by Airs McDonald. Tho chairman and secretary were appointed a visiting committee for August. A motion of sympathy with the relatives of the lato Air R. L. Tippler and All- L. Jenkins was passed.
Miss Rita Roach, who has been nursing in Sydney for tho past year, is spending six weeks’ holiday with her parents, Air and Airs J. A. Roach. Aliss R. Brann resumed duties on Alonday after four months spent with relatives in Auckland. Airs W. Brabant, Auckland, is tho guest of Air and Mrs J. B. Brann. Mr and Mrs E. N. Macauiey, who have been on a motor tour of Hawke’s Bay, have returned home. Mr C. P. Grey, Who has been recuperating after a serious illness, has returned from Napier. Air F. Thurston, of tho Bank of New Zealand staff, is on furlough, which ho intends to spend in Auckland. Tho friends of Airs W. Butler will regret. to learn that she took suddenly ill on Monday morning, and will wish her a speedy recovery.
