RISE SHOWN AT NAPIER. NAPTER. Aug. 4. A rise in the cost of living at Napier of 8.1 per cent, in the food' groups alone for Mav 1937. compared with May. 1936, was admitted by Hon. W. E. Barnard, speaking at Napier. Food groups included groceries, dairy produce, and meat. “The Government has exercised with prudence the large powers conferred under the Prevention of Profiteering Act,” said Mr Barnard, “but if individual persons, firms or companies abuse that prudence and go out to exact excessive tribute from the public, the Government will not hesitate to make use of its powers as is necessary in the public interest.”
