WAIATA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) WAIATA, Aug. 5. The July meeting of the Waiata Women’s Institute was held at the residence of Mm J. Rcdshaw on Wednesday, Mrs A. 0. Simpson presiding over a good attendance. Three visitors, Mrs Barnicoat, Mrs W. G. Short, and Mrs Gardner, of Ashburton, were welcomed. Mrs Simpson expressed regret that one of the first members, Mrs L. Porteh, was leaving the district, and it was decided to send her a present with the best wishes of her fellow members. In a vigorous debate, “Should Women Enter Men’s Sphere of Work ?” the honours went to the negative team, Mesdames Miller, 11. Wilson, and P. Bailey. The affirmative side was presented by Misdanies Bremmcr, Gore and Mbs M. Brown. Mrs Short and Mrs Barnicoat kindly acted as judges. Mrs C. Wilson gave an interesting demonstration of hairpin work, and the beautiful examples which she showed inspired everyone • with the desire to acquire the art. Mrs Wilson was accorded a vote of thanks. Mrs ■Miller was the winner of a competition for an article made from a fiourbag, her entry being a dainty child’s frock. Airs H. Wilson gained second place. Mbs Jean Rcdshaw’s pansy was voted the host bloom of the month, (Mrs Brown’s anemone securing second place. A competition for-a hat made from a sheet of newspaper and six pins brought forth some amusing entries, Mrs Walker’s model being placed first, Mrs McLeod's second. The series of Golden Chain talks were continued by Mrs Walker, wlio spoke on Thomas Edison, and Mrs Rcdshaw who took as her subject Mrs David Livingstone. Afternoon tea was served by the hostrsecs, Miss Rcdshaw and Mrs Midi's, who were accorded a hearty vote of thanks.
