February 5. The crisis continues and is likely to have a prolonged existence, certainly till a reply is received from "the Imperial authorities, which is not expected before the end of February. In the meantime Ministers are pursuing their headlong course m the matter of dismissals* A further batch of officers was dispensed with last Friday, including" all the principal officers of the Education Department, from the^ secretary down to the supernumary clerks. The Governor has " been informed by several legal gentleman that his proceedings are illegal." The feeling against the Governor is 'getting stronger amongst a certain class. February 6. A despatch from Lord Carnarvon to the Governor, conveying Lord Carnarvon's assent to the Land Tax Bill, says : " I approve of the attitude of striot impartiality whioh you properly observed during the discussion. ' The drought is completely broken throughout the colony.
