THE COURT OF STAR CHAMBER.
Coke asserts that the Chamber was so called i'rom the fact of its roof being garnished with stars ; but this has been contradicted, as those stars were obliterated before the time of Elizabeth. Ie is more probable it derived its name fvoni the iitarra, Jewish covenants deposited there by order of Jiiuhard the Eii-st. No sla.r or covenant was allowed to be valid, except found iv these repositories, and here they remained till the banishment of the Jews by Edward the Fir3t. The Court was instituted by Henry the Seventh for trials by a Commii tee of the Privy Council, whi.ch was iv violation of Magna Chavla, as it dealt with civil and criminal causes unfeitered by the rules of law. In the reign cf Cliui-les the First it exercised its power upon several innovators upon liberty, who only gloried m their sufferings, and contributed to render the Government more, contemptible. It was abolished m 16^1.
