THE "VIPER" AGAIN.
TO, THB BDITOB. :—"r- --' . Sl *.— Oa looking over last Wednesday's Standard, I noticed a paragraph speaking oi th* morhid State of the Feilding Guardian, and boasting, that its {Standard's) circulation was far larger than any other m the Manchester- "District, 2"[ow, S.jr, I happen to know from a reliable source that instead of being IQO, as he a%nisiit is more like 25.. JDoaa T he Editor, of the Standard imaJipe that the people m the Manchester. Disrict, are such fools as to believe him ft I can •WW** him. they are not, and the constant Mpat'tion. ftf sqch pfjtry and glaring falsefcW&klwwaw furious tefeimsftf the*
toithe other local journals. The Editor of the Guardian appears to $reat the empty remarks of the Standard with quiet contempt, which is far more to the former's credit, and more galling to the^latt'eif than if >he filled his whole paperwith recriminations. He also says that the Guardian &r»t lost its editor (riot a^great lost), then its foreman, pressnaan, and. two oy threeo-hers;^ and that it is how being brought out by one man and* boy. Now/ Sir, if such is the case* it does not speak .very well either for himself or two of his employe\ (all three of whom were engaged m .bringing out the Guardian when it'was a far -leis^ creditable production than it is at the prWeat*time)' bat 'rather to the credit of; the man and boy, arid a great-saving to the proprietor. I-have spoken to -"great" many on the subject*©! the - Manawatu papers, and the general opinion is, 'that both the Palmerston and Feilding papers are improving m every respect; audit- will require something more than constant puffing before the Standard has the patronage- or circulation of the former journals. It .shows Tery/baji: taste; indeed, on the "part of any man after getting discharged" from his situation* to use the columns of a. rival journal, m abusing his •former master, but you cannot expect anything else from a man with the sobriquet of "Mick Mean." Hoping I hare not taken up too much of your valuable space.— l am, &o. " •'•' ' .... -.._.....-. — -jvmct. Feilding, January 26, 1881.
