AUCKLAND, Last Mght. Ireland Brothers' Panraure Tannery. tb,e Urgeat and most extensive ra tnufactory of the kind ?a New Zealand was totally destroyed by fire this morning. When the fire was first discovered the I flame* bad a firm hold of the buildings, and nothing could he done to save them, or tfc good.H stored m them- Nothing is kmmn. to lead jq the slightest to the origin of |he fire t The total loss is estimated at about L2Q,OOQ Among the property destroyed were 6000 sides of leather, 18 bales of basil, 600 calves skin, MOObido, BQQ tQ&toi bark, and 30QQ
gallons of cod oil. The tannery, which did a large business, gave employment to about eighty men. The New Zealand office had a policy of L 7,6000 on the tannery, but most of it was re-insured. The following is an approximate of the losees of the various companies involved : New Zealand, L 3500; Union, L 700; Standard, L 35 0; Trans - Atlantic, LSOO ; Victoria, L 350 ; and the North British.
