Mr Thorpe, surveyor, * who arrived from Murimotu yesterday, informs the Wanganui Herald m reference to the arrest of the native Aropeta, that fortunately there was no difficulty m securing him. When the constables am rived at the pah, the young men were, absent, Aropeta and a number of young women being all that were present. On being informed of their mission, the old man wished the police ■ to wait till his sons arrived. Orders left at the limes Office will receive prompt attertion. We have obtained a copy of what purports to be '• The Woodville Examiner, ' but which at the first glance we mistook for a few weeks-old copy of our | local contemporary. The typographical \ get-up had a familiar appearance, and the advertisements strongly reminded us of the " dummies" mentioned during the recent controversy. We observe, that about three fourths of the advertisements m the new journal consist ofthese, which are thus made to do double duty, while the reading matter, with the exception of a few items m the second page, is merely a reprint of articles which have appeared m our local contemporary, "printer's errors" and all. We are inclined to think that the Woodville people will not long remain satisfied with a paper issued upon such a peculiar plan. It is announced that copies of " The Beauties of Shakespeare" and " The Christian Keepsake" can be obtained from Mr J\ Robinson, who is at present staying at the Commercial Hotel. These are the pen-and-ink sketches executed by Mr J. M. Meek, to which we alluded yesterday. At a meeting of the Fire Brigade held on Wednesday evening a letter was reaa from the M ational Insurance Company to the effect that it was not the rule for Companies of the kind to aid brigades by grants of money, but that it was the duty of corporations to look after such institutions. Notice of motion was given to alter the date of general meeting to second Wednesday m the month so as not to clash with the borough €ouncil feeetfe|; '

Once a man lakes to a literary life: there is no saying where he will pull up. Cr Ferguson some time ago established that fireside magazine : known as " the : Settler's FrienJ," and now he has aspired to the authorship of, a by-law for the corporation of this thriving Borough. This by-law relates to protection of chimneys from fire, and it is 'said that the primum mobile of this ' action on his part was a certain smoke vent m a certain newspaper office. Strange to say the result of bis action so far has been to cause sadness m both local newspaper offices. The Councillor haviug given birth to the by-law felt himself like all good parents, bound to watch its deve« lopment, and on perusing" the advertisement of it m the Times, his eagle eye discovered that the printer's imp had placed. a figure 9 where an 8 ought to be m the date of the year! Any judge of the Supreme Court:/ or being of that kind of inferior intelligence, would cer- ! tainly have ruled that this error was of no moment, as it was sufficiently patent to common sense that the , current, year was meant. But Councillor Ferguson was not going to have his pet jeopardised and to mark his sense of the injury done he moved that the account for the advertising be not paid. But the other paper's account was passed without re • moastraace and yet this contained a more serious error, for while the error m the Times was mainly due to the fact that the advertisement was brought m late, and an endeavor was made to get it m that day to comply with the Act, the error of the Standard was that the advertisement did not appear m it seven clear days before the meeting as required by the Act, and its publication there was therefore worthless. The advertisement was given m by tb,e Town Clerk to both papers on the same day, but did not appear m the Standard until the following day. We now leain that the matter of the payment of the cost of ads j vertising to the Standard will form the subject ot enquiry at next Council meet, ing.
