The apppointment of Mr G. M. Snelson as creditors trustee m the estate of William fisher, of Athurst, is gazetted m our advertising columns, 'i'he amount of beer duty collected m New Zealand] for the month of September was L 3986, as agaiust L 5293 for August and L 4399 for September, 1882. At a stock- sale beid at JSanson on Thursday cattle brought slightly better prices, and sheep were m demand. The tullowing prices were realized : — Two* and-a-half-year-old steers, £4 • two-year-old mixed, £2 10s ; two-year-old heifers, £2 ; store cows, £2 ; milch cows, £4 2s 6d ; yearlings, £l 17s 6d ; calves £1 6« to LI 7s 6d ; fat sheep, 11s 6d to 14s 6dj store wethers, 10s 3d] ewes and lambs, 7s 6d ; mixed sheep, 9s 7«I. - A seven-roomed house m a pleasant situation m Palmerston is advertised for sale< or to let. Further particulars can be obtained at this office. , The N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency circular for October states that the account sales ot shipments of frozen meat sent to London per British Queen, display : the satisfactory average of 6fd. to 7|d. p:r lb., obtained m London, with a net resnlt of 23s to 27s per head for each carcase, including the price realized for offal. This must be considered eminently satisfactory, and should induce greatly extended operations both m breeding and fattening. The New Zealand Customs revenue for the first half of the current financial year, that is, for the six months ended 30th ultimo, amounted to L 704,426 which is L 54.574 less than half the. Treasurer's estimate for the whole year. The beer duty for the half year realised L 26.043, which ts L 4956 below the proportionate estimate. It is understood, however, the stamps are considerably m excess of the estimate, and that other items of revenue are so well to the good that the aggregate estimate for the half year will be closely approached if not quite reached. — Post. The Post has/been shown two samples of timber which have been used m the construction of the Queen's Wharf. The first consists of a piece of Australian iron bark, which hag been under water for about 18 months, and this shows the ravages of the worm, the wood being bored through and through as. if by a gimlet. The other piece consists of New Zealand totara, which has been under water for 20 years.a nd appears as sound as ever it was. The totara, however, has been, we believe, sheathed, m copper, but m any! ease the opinion of experts goes to show that totara is capable of resisting the worm for a much longer period than any other kind of imber. '
An extraordinary case is reported by the Nelson Colonist as having beeu heard at Havelock the other day A. publican named Moses Fear was charged under the 91st section of the Licensing Act of 1881, which reads as follows: — " Every person who shall sell or offer for sale any liquor which is mixed with any ingredient or material injurious to ! health, or whereby any such liquor is rendered injurious to the health of per* sons drinking the same, and every person who shal sel 1 as unadulterated an/ liquor which is adulterated shall, on conviction, be liable fur every such offence to a penalty not exceeding L 20." Mr Pitt prosecuted ou behalf of Mr Horton, the chairman of *he local Licensing Bench, and Mr M'Nab appeared for the defendant, whilst the charge was heard before Mr Allen, R.M. The allegation was that the defendant purchased croton oil, which is a power.* ful purgative, from a local medical man for the purpose of giving a dose of the mixture to the chairman of the Licensing Bench. Mr Horton suffered very considerably from the effec's of the mixture. The Magistrate adjourned the case for a fortnight, and there is a possibility of a new information being laid .under the 21st section of the Offences against the Persons Act of 1867. A letter for "X.T.Z." is ''awaiting* delivery at this office. The Customs. revenue for the colony, collected m the month of September, 1883,. was L 109,040. as against L139,804f0r the previous month, and L 140,089 for September, 1882. The New Zealand Customs revenue for the quarter ended 30th ultimo amounted to £358,874, as against L 345,552 tor the preceding quarter. The immigration nominations for the outgoing mail numbered 260 for the whole colony, exclusive of ;| Auckland, from which place no returns have been received. The respective nominations were :— Otago, 83 ; Canterbury, 65 ; Wellington, 38 :. .Southland, 27; Hawkes Bay, 21 ; Westland, til ; Nelson, 7; Taranaki and Maryborough, 4 eacb. •>, At the Melbourne criminal sessions; Archibald M'Donald pleaded guilty to a charge of bigamy. Ihe prisoner left his wife m New Zeas land, came to Melbourne, and on the 3rd February, 1882, was married at St Mary's Church, Hotham, tp one Margaret Fitzgerald. The prisoner was sentenced to 18 months' hard labor. The money collected m the streets of Rome: by the -Society of Veterans, forthe relief of the poor people of Ischia, amounted to nearly 9000 francs. Among the objects given were rings with and without l stones, bracelets, gold and silver watches, chains, gold buttons, and other personal ornaments. The shopkeepers m Corao, and especially the dealers m various description.* of dry goods, gave large quantities of the most useful articles, In parsing sentence on Henry Winter» "tne Indian Corn Doctor, Judge Williams remarked that he considered this the most wholesale case of swindling creditors he had ever heard of. The Judge added — " I dare .say you ex* pected to receive a sentence of six mopthi, and that you have a large amount ofmoney still seciettdsomewhere, or put out of the way, is very plain. I must, therefore, pass upon you a substantial sentence to show the trading community that these offences are not to be permitted, and that the interests ot commerce and trade must be protected." The prisoner was sentenced to two years and six months' imprisonment. On a subsequent day he received an ad* ditional sentence of 10 months for perjury commuted m the Insolvency Court. It would be to the advantage of all purcha sera of Drapery and Clothiug to luepect the Goods just opened at M'Dowell Bros., Cash Warehouse. We can confidently say the prices are as ton i»hingiy loWi and for range of choice tthe stock cannot be equalled m the' district. — Advt. , ; ■
